Hamburger Mary's / Toucan's

Usually in the case of franchise operations (and HM is a franchise), a
change in name/format often follows a rift between the franchise owner
and the franchise operator.

If a lot of operators start to bail at the same time it may mean that
the franchise owner may not have lived up to his end of the agreement
(to provide certain amounts of advertising, guidance, etc) or
conversely, the operators may have not run the franchises to the
specifications set forth in the franchise agreement.

Sometimes the operators stay with the franchise until they figure out
how to run the business themselves and then just stop paying the
franchise fees and royalties (I saw this firsthand in the 80s when I
was in the video business and franchises like National Video and West
Coast Video would collect exorbitant franchise fees and provide not a
whole lot of anything to the local shopkeepers.

As with everything else in life, follow the money.

the building is closing, its future is unknown. if it hasnt been
answered the name toucans was used to retain the tropical feeling that
the place had without having to remodel everything. The owners changed
the name to get away from paying franchise fees once their contract
expired. hope this helps

I am happy to see what looks like the true reason for the name change.

People can say things that impact other peoples businesses and lives
without really knowing what they are talking about. Just from reading
the posts on this list, One could decide to never go to a Hamburger
Mary's. That would be a shame.

I don't know of any franchised business that supports your lifestyle
like Mary's does. I have the pleasure of knowing the corporate owners of
Mary's. I have nothing but great things to say about them. They welcomed
me dressed as Kimi and go out of their way to make sure I have a great
time at Mary's. I go to the Hamburger Mary's in Newport Beach , CA.,
it's a corporate owned location.

Hopefully, the community of CD's will wake up and get out and support
the businesses that support us. I know all the reasons we have not to go
out dressed. But You can always show up in drab for a lunch or dinner.
Then when you do get a chance to go out dressed there will be place to
go that welcomes you. I promote Mary's because I want to keep my Mary's
alive. I want a place to go dressed!

I try to go 2-4 times a month. I even host a social once a month there
for CD/TV/TS, and one for BDSM friends. The turnout of CD's is poor at
best, but those who show up have a great time. While the BDSM group has
anywhere from 20 to 40 showing up. This Mary's is the best place to go
dressed in the LA area, and it is right by John Wayne Airport in
"OC". Ok I will step off the soap box, I was just trying to wake some
of you up. Think about it.

I'm not hearing any dissing of the chain in this thread. What I'm
hearing is disappointment of the closure of the one in Las Vegas and
speculation as to why they (and apparently some others) dropped the
chain affiliation.

I have to admit they have been good to DLV over the past few years.

Some people have reported issues with food preparation, but overall they
have been a nice place to go to eat, drink, and hang out. Everything
I've ever had there has been good.

We started going there when one of the managers at the old Keys moved
over to HM. He assured us that HM's would be T-friendly and invited us
there.

I'm just sad to see it go.

I've been to the location by JW airport. Walked in, made one loop around
the bar and hit the door. Perhaps it was due to a lack of familiar
clientele or just not being in my typical stomping grounds, but I didn't
feel at ease there.

The HM in San Diego is pretty well known in the tg community here as not
being the most gender friendly establishment. In comparison to other
places in Hillcrest they're way down on the list of where the tg crowd
frequents. I'm going to miss the LV location.

I don't know what makes you feel at ease, But lack of familiar faces
and new stomping grounds are reason to not feel at ease. Next time I
hope you stop and talk to someone, at least a waitress or waiter. Ask
them questions to put yourself at ease, then if you still feel that
way... leave. I hope yo try it again, it would be nice to see you
there.

Kimi

PS

I can't answer about San Diego, Have not been there.

I probably will try it again. I just started a new job today (that's a
whole separate story, who says companies won't let you go cause you're
trans) and my territory includes California, Nevada and Arizona. At
least the new place says it's ok to be tg/ts.
